Bearcat golfers miss win by single stroke

After carding a season-low 351 to win the two-day Casper Invitational last week for their sixth straight tournament win, the Scottsbluff girls’ golf team was at the Ogallala Invite Sept. 20.

Although they played well enough to take the title, they fell short by one shot. Posting a 353 team score, Scottsbluff was a stroke behind McCook at 352.

Leading the Bearcats was junior Shelby Poynter, who shot a six under par round of 67 to set a new school record and claim the individual title at Ogallala.

Although she started slow, Poynter finished her last four holes with a birdie, an eagle, a par, and a final birdie. Head Coach Mike Klein called it an “awesome day.”

Scottsbluff’s only other varsity player, DJ Bokelman, shot an 89 to medal in seventh place. The other two team members were sophomore junior varsity golfers. Sarah Lewis shot a 98 and Kathryn Phillips was a stroke back at 99. Ashlyn Haun, who would have rounded out team, was ill and couldn’t made the trip.

“Everybody had their best round ever.” Klein said. “It’s a rarity when everyone has a great day like that. DJ and our two sophomores are going to get even better.”

Klein added the younger players he took were the ones who would be back next year, so he wanted to give them some varsity experience.

Gering shot a team score of 379 at Ogallala, which Coach Jessica Boswell said was great for them. Megan Maser medaled in ninth place with a 92. Jaylen Beam finished 10th with a round of 94. Teammate Afton Mitchell fired a 96 with Baily Kreider a stroke back at 97. Ali Boswell came in at 103. “They were pleased with their scores but also know they are capable of doing better,” Boswell said.

Complete stats were unavailable at press time.
