Bearcats sweep tennis triangular

The Scottsbluff boys’ tennis team turned in a solid performance at a triangular event in Alliance Sept. 27 as they get ready for the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament on Oct. 1 in Hastings.

The Bearcats were to have played in Hastings the previous weekend for the Hastings Invitational, but it was called on account of heavy rain – the morning after the Bearcats arrived.

With six singles players and three doubles teams, the Bearcats picked up two wins on the afternoon, 9-0 over Gering and a 7-2 downing of host Alliance.

“We were able to stay up and play well,” said Scottsbluff Head Coach Maddie Johnson. “The team did well mentally.”

All of the Bearcats played four matches as No. 1 singles Sam McCaslin blanked Gering’s Josh Wilson 8-0 and got an 8-4 win over Alliance’s Richie Toedth.

Thomas Madden, at No. 2 singles for Scottsbluff, split his matches with an 8-3 win over Gering’s Tyler Tjaden and losing 1-8 to Trajan Garcia of Alliance.

Scottsbluff senior Soren Mercer-Smith at No. 3 singles posted two wins: 8-5 over Grant Maser of Gering and 8-1 over Jake McCaffrey of Alliance.

No. 4 singles Brady Sindt, a senior, had an 8-0 win over Gering’s Dyson Dollarhide, followed by an 8-2 win over Alliance’s Caden Dean.

Scottsbluff junior Mason Ramig also posted two wins at No. 5 singles with an 8-3 victory over Juan Aguilar of Gering and 8-1 over Alliance’s Dylan Horton.

The No. 6 singles match had Bearcat senior Gunnar Buchhammer taking two wins, 8-2 over Gering’s Caleb Andrews and 8-3 over Zach Placek of Alliance.

The singles players paired up for doubles action as Scottsbluff went 2-1. At No. 1 doubles, Sindt and Mercer-Smith were 8-1 winners over Gering’s Dollarhide and Tjaden. They also posted an 8-0 win over Horton and Placek of Alliance.

At No. 2 doubles for the Bearcats, it was Buchhammer and Ramig with an 8-6 win over Maser and Wilson of Gering, followed by an 8-2 victory over Caden Dean and Preston Pohlman of Alliance.

The Bearcat No. 3 doubles team of McCaslin and Madden split their two matches. After an 8-2 win over Gering’s Aguilar and Andrews, they were bested 4-8 by the Alliance team of Toedth and Garcia.

Gering Head Coach Justin Reinmuth said the team is doing well, although he was a little disappointed in the team’s performance at Alliance.

“I felt we could have pulled away with more wins than we did,” Reinmuth said “I’d like to see the kids work on mental toughness to dig themselves out of a match when down.”

The Alliance triangular was the last regular season event for Gering. Reinmuth said the team will continue to work hard to be competitive at the state tournament, coming up Oct. 13-14.

Scottsbluff has two more events to play before the state tournament. This Saturday (Oct. 1) they’re back in Hastings, hopefully with better weather, to compete in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament. The Bearcats wrap up their regular season Oct. 4 with a dual against McCook.

Last year, Scottsbluff placed second at their conference tournament. Coach Johnson said she expects they will be in the top two this year as well, although Kearney always plays them tough.

“I’m looking forward to see results on Saturday because that will give us a good idea on how we will do at State and where we might be seeded,” she said.
