Long-time golf coach suspended

An investigation continues into long-time Scottsbluff golf coach Mike Klein.

Last week, the Scottsbluff Police Department contacted the school district about an investigation they were conducting, along with the nature of the allegations, resulting in Klein’s paid administrative leave.

“Nothing has changed since Mike was placed on administrative leave,” said Scottsbluff Activities Director and High School Vice-Principal Dave Hoxworth on Tuesday. “The investigation is still underway and the police will keep us apprised of anything that’s going on. Right now it’s a waiting game.”

Middle School Principal Bert Wright has been appointed as interim coach. He will be assisted for the last three tournaments of the girls’ golf season by Assistant Coach Mariah Busch.

“Bert has coached boys’ golf here for several years and has coached teams at the state level,” Hoxworth said. “He knows the procedure that goes along with qualifying for districts and state. This girls’ team has a good chance of qualifying this year and we wanted to give them the best chance of doing well.

The Scottsbluff girls’ golf team is at home today (Sept. 30) for the final regular event of the season, hosting the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament. The district tournament will be played in Sidney on Oct. 3 with the state tournament on Oct. 10 and 11.

In the meantime, Scottsbluff School Superintendent Rick Myles has asked the public not to speculate or pre-judge the situation until the investigation is completed. is completed.
