Scottsbluff wins conference golf tourney

The Scottsbluff girls’ golf team shot a season low score of 344 to win its sixth tournament during the Western Conference Tournament in Alliance on Sept. 24.

Although the wind was blowing hard, the Bearcats managed to take seven strokes off their previous best round at the Skyview Golf Course.

Four Bearcats placed in the individual top 10 to win medals. The top finisher was junior Shelby Poynter with a 75 round. However, Chadron’s Alpine Hickstein also shot a 75 and the winner was decided by a two-hole playoff, which Assistant Coach Mariah Busch said was “incredible to watch.”

Other Scottsbluff golfers in the top 10 were Rachel Hancock with a round of 85, D.J. Bokelman at 91, and Jordyn Hoxworth two strokes back at 93. Teammate Ashlyn Haun finished at 103.

“All the girls have continued to work hard and show up to every tournament determined to do their best for that day,” Busch said. “Despite the windy conditions, the girls powered through their rounds to knock out a season low score of 344.”

Gering placed second at the Western Conference Tournament with a team score of 380 to wrap up its regular season. Two Bulldogs won medals as Afton Mitchell finished seventh with a 92 round, with Ali Boswell firing a 96 for 10th place.

Both Megan Maser and Baily Kreider also shot rounds of 96, but didn’t place in the top 10. Jaylen Beam was a stroke back at 97.

“All of our players broke 100 and it was great for the girls to end their season on a high note,” said Coach Jessica Boswell. “The wind made it pretty tough, but they fought through. This should give them momentum going into districts.”

The district tournament is scheduled for Oct. 3 in Sidney. Boswell said the girls really want to place in the top three to qualify for state as a team. To make that happen, they’ll have to shoot below 380 at districts.

Before next week’s district tournament, Scottsbluff will host its final regular season match, the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament at Scotts Bluff Country Club today (Sept. 30).
