Bearcat tennis wraps regular season

After rain cancelled the previous week’s matches in Hastings, the Scottsbluff boys’ tennis team was back for the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament on Oct. 1. The Bearcats scored 19 total points to place fourth.

Scottsbluff Head Coach Maddie Johnson said it wasn’t their best performance as a team. The #1 doubles team finished third. While they should have won one of those matches, the mental game got in the way.

“We didn’t finish within the top two, which was our goal,” Johnson said. “We’ve been talking a lot about being mentally tough and that had been our downfall this season.”

Scottsbluff’s Oct. 4 dual against McCook went better for the Bearcats as the team came away with a 3-1 victory.

Johnson said that although they made mistakes at critical points in the match, the team showed more mental toughness and played well. Sam McCaslin at No. 1 singles had a 6-1, 6-4 win over Spencer Krysl of McCook and Thomas Madden at No. 2 singles was a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victor over Sam Knoll.

Brady Sindy and Soren Mercer-Smith at No. 1 doubles took a 6-4, 6-1 win over Josiah Hegwood and Syd Wier. The Bearcats’ only loss was at No, 2 doubles when Gunnar Buchhammer and Mason Ramig went down 5-7, 6-2, 3-6 to Zion Moyer and Caden Bortner.

“Looking ahead at state, we need to start the day off very confident in our ability to compete with anyone,” Coach Johnson said. “I am looking to have at least one team make it to the second day.”

The state tennis tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13-14 in Lincoln.
