The Gering volleyball team had some momentum going for them last weekend after a straight-sets win over Cheyenne Central in the Twin Cities Invitational. However, Gering went 1-5 in the tournament, including a loss to rival Scottsbluff.

“The kids have continued to work hard and we’ve had some good practices,” said Gering Coach Dave Lashley. “It just doesn’t always make it to the court for the match.”

But on Tuesday night (Oct. 4), a Battle of the Bulldogs against Alliance at home turned into a real thriller as Gering went five sets to take the win. Scores were 18-25, 25-22, 27-27, 25-21, and 15-11.

The win improved Gering’s season record to 5-18, but it also came at a cost. Gering will be without the services of Victoria Schwartz for the rest of the season with a broken foot.

Gering setter Brittney Spreier helped out with 32 assists against Alliance and also adding eight kills, 12 digs and two service aces.

Makenzie Dunkel led Gering with a team high 12 kills. Teammates Arianna Mitchell chipped in nine kills. Olivia Schaub had seven and Courtney Conn added another six. Schaub also had two service aces.

Mariah Conn led Gering with four blocks on the night. Mitchell, Spreier, Schaub and Carlee Brester each added another two blocks.

Gering is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Western Conference Tournament in Scottsbluff.
