Photo by Nathan Flowers/Spectrum Photography The day was full of threes for Gering senior Rebekah Rawlings, who came in third with a time of 20:00.4, along with her team finish, also in third on the day’s effort. Thursday’s district competition results were not available as of press time.
Gering’s Cross Country team was in Cheyenne on Oct. 7 for the Leroy Sprague Invitational at Cheyenne’s Prairie View Golf Course. Both the girls’ and boy’s squads ran what Coach Rick Marez called “pretty good races” as the Gering girls finished in third place with a team score of 67. The boys placed sixth with a 128 team score.

Marez said it was a good day for running. “In the last few years of the invite, Cheyenne has been cold and rainy. This year it was in the high 60s, so the conditions were great.

Two Gering runners finished in the top 15 as senior Rebekah Rawlings came in third with a time of 20:00.4. Teammate Tukker Romey was close behind in sixth with a 20:32.9 time.

The Gering boys placed sixth with a 128 team score. The Bulldogs were led by junior Xavier Arellano, whose 17:09.2 time placed him in second on the individual board. Senior Tanner Walker came in fifth with a 17:44.0 time over the 5K course.

“Xavier Arellano and Tanner Walker both ran really good races to lead the boys’ team,” Marez said. “So did Rebekah Rawlings and Tukker Romey for the girls. All four of them have been pretty consistent throughout the season and have gradually gotten better every week.”

He also pointed out that many of the Gering runners turned in their personal best times at Cheyenne.

“Overall we were better than I anticipated,” Marez said. “The team competed well and it was a good tune-up meet for districts.”

The same day Gering was running in Cheyenne, Scottsbluff was at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference meet at Elwood, just south of Lexington.

The Scottsbluff boys scored 119 points to take sixth place. Their two runners in the top 15 were senior brothers Josh and Noah Hergenreder. Josh ran a time of 16:37.89 to place second. Noah was in 8th place with a 17:19.73 time.

The Scottsbluff girls placed second with a 44 team score. Senior Whitney Riesen finished at the top of the individual board with a time of 18:56.47. Teammate Kaylee Bentley, a junior, was in fourth with a 19:56.44 time. Kierra Schmidt, another junior, ran in at 20:22.12 for 9th place. Sophomore Morgan Mickey placed 13th with a 20:53:00 time.

Both Scottsbluff and Gering competed in the B-4 District meet at the West Winds Country Club in Ogallala on Oct. 13, but results weren’t available at press time.

Looking forward to the state meet, Gering’s Coach Marez said it could be a long shot to qualify the entire boys’ team for the state meet due to a number of injuries. However, the girls’ should be very competitive.

The top three teams and the top 15 individual runners from districts qualify for the state meet, scheduled for Oct. 21 in Kearney.
